Howard Building Corporation company

The vision to build.
The commitment to deliver.

At HBC, we're building the future one space at a time. With over 30 years as a general contracting firm, we understand the complexity of construction. That's why our team is filled with specialists who are not only accomplished in their field, but also innovative in their execution. From the moment a project is established, we take the time to meticulously interpret our clients' needs. Using the newest technology and project management tools, we ensure that every step of the process is clear and comprehensive, keeping our clients engaged and inspired. What begins with their unique vision, ends with the realization of their ultimate reality. Our approach to construction is more refined than most, but then again, so are our results.

Foundation

Howard Building Corporation was founded in July 1983 by Mike Howard in the city of Orange. Since the day the doors opened, HBC began to grow, and Mr. Howard was quickly joined by two partners, Gary Conrad and Paul McGunnigle. The three remained partners and sole owners for over 30 years. Today, HBC has transitioned to an Employee-Owned Company and maintains offices in Downtown Los Angeles and Costa Mesa. Mr. McGunnigle and Mr. Howard continue to be involved in the oversight of HBC alongside a growing family of 170 people.

Our Values

1
Every transaction must be fair for all involved.

We believe that every interaction should be handled with equal fairness for everyone involved. This includes how we interact with clients, architects, brokers, construction managers, vendors, subcontractors, and with each other within our own organization. Our commitment to fairness guides our decisions and results in positive outcomes that build stronger relationships defined by a deep sense of trust.

2
We look forward to every challenge with confidence.

There are no challenges too large for our team. We all consider challenges opportunities, and we look forward to approaching them with confidence in our abilities to achieve the best results. We do this through cooperation and open communication, and we present solutions with a proactive, rather than reactive, attitude, allowing us to face any situation knowing we will find successful solutions. We take pride in the fact that we always deliver.

3
We build what no one has built before.

From our love of challenges comes the ability to engage in projects that push the boundaries of what is possible. We do not take risks recklessly, but we seek the opportunity to achieve new levels of building in commercial interiors that no one has yet achieved. No project is too large, and no design is impossible to build.

4
We embrace our role as leaders in the industry.

As we have grown through the years, we have developed a unique role as a leader within our industry. As leaders, we feel a responsibility not just to our clients and colleagues, but to the entire building industry as well. We strive to lead by example through our actions in business, and we make decisions based on long-term outcomes rather than short-term gains, with the intention of always building a better future.

5
We are good citizens in our community.

As individuals and as a company, we believe in giving generously to our community. Our community includes both industry related organizations and those groups that serve the greater good in Southern California and beyond. Through the power of giving back, we extend ourselves beyond our boundaries to be involved citizens who offer compassion, support and hope to the many we help serve.

100% Employee-Owned

In 2016, the three owners of HBC sold the company to the employees. By working with an employee-owned company, our clients know the entire HBC team is wholly dedicated to the success of every project.

100% EMPLOYEE OWNED
Our finest moment is when Gary [Conrad], Paul [McGunnigle], and I decided to sell the company to the employees. After all, the employees are what makes HBC the success it is today.
- Mike Howard, Founder

Building the Future Through Leadership, Service, Inclusion, & Sustainability

Our diverse project teams are committed to exceptional client service. An active and innovative employee culture has shaped our company’s approach to employee-ownership and ESG principles, including equity, inclusion, and sustainability.

Our dedication to our clients and employees sets us apart in the industry, and we have built our company on the strength of our relationships and the success of our projects.

Sustainability

At HBC, we take pride in being a leader of the green building movement in Southern California. By implementing green building policies, sharing data-driven information, and promoting environmentally-sustainable practices, we can all do our part to be conscious, responsible contributors within the construction industry.

Our leadership encourages sustainability by leading by example. HBC's CEO, Mark Fuller, currently sits on the Board of Directors for the U.S. Green Building Council-Los Angeles (USGBC-LA) Chapter. Our Executive Chairman of the Board, Paul McGunnigle, is a past USGBC-LA Board Member and recipient of the Heart of the Chapter award.

I’m proud and pleased at what the industry has done in a short amount of time, and how we’ve created an expectation [for green building]. All of that will change the workspace we know.
– Mark Fuller, CEO

Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

By honoring the unique attributes, cultures, and experiences that our HBC family has to offer, all of us at HBC benefit. We have made great strides in attracting and retaining a diverse workforce, but we still have much to do. As a leader in our industry, we feel it is our responsibility to be the example of what an entirely inclusive construction team looks like. With a firm grasp on where we are today, and a clear roadmap to where we want to be, HBC will continue to cultivate a workforce that accurately represents the communities where we work and live.

Community Involvement

We approach each day as an opportunity to positively impact the community. Since HBC holds locations in both Orange and Los Angeles counties, our community spans throughout Southern California and beyond. We build partnerships with both industry-related organizations and charities who champion causes that are important to us as individuals. Each year, this list expands to encompass an even greater reach. Through the power of giving back, we extend ourselves beyond our boundaries to be involved citizens who offer compassion, support, and hope to the people we help serve. By doing what is in our power, we can bring about positive, measurable change to the greater community. Some of the organizations we partnered with last year include:
