Project Description

As data demand increases and existing networks become congested, Boingo Wireless provides cost-effective connection services for consumers and carriers by expanding data capacity in large venues like airports, stadiums, university campuses and military bases by deploying state-of-the-art Wi-Fi and distributed antenna system (DAS) small cell networks.  HBC worked with Gensler to build the heart of the global organization’s operations in Los Angeles.

The 52,000 square foot office space spans two full floors and is connected by an existing internal spiral staircase that acts as the central hub for the entire office.  By opening the deck and wrapping the custom built steel staircase around a structural column, the supporting cross beams bisect the  stairwell opening and become a design feature that was reclad and painted the same dark grey accent color used throughout the space for millwork and feature walls.  A red painted slat ceiling design echoes the spiral of the staircase and is contained by curved walls that create the main social and meeting center of the office.

The reception desk and main conference area are adjacent to the first floor’s open lobby, and the company’s Network Operation Center, where all network monitoring occurs, resides on the other side of the lobby.  With advanced technology and 10 large integrated flat screen monitors mounted within the Center, this space required enhanced IT, audio visual, electrical and climate control capabilities.  The main kitchen is located on the floor above this space, along with a lounge.

Open office space is punctuated by smaller social meeting areas, including a space with a floor to ceiling writable wall used for team meetings and strategy sessions.  Polished concrete floors give a raw feeling to the space while carpet islands define specific areas of activity, such as seating areas and workstation pods.  Wall graphics provide clear messaging and branding throughout the space, and the use of dark grey and red design features further reinforce the company’s identity.

The lighting package for the space includes lighting controls, LED fixtures, motion sensors and daylight harvesting in compliance with updated Title 24 regulations, and exposed ceilings are insulated for acoustics and noise attenuation.
