Project Description
The Herman Miller National Design Center in Los Angeles began as a unique project in that the core and shell building had already been converted from a raw warehouse space to an 18,000 square foot LEED certified building. The sustainable nature of the building fit perfectly with Herman Miller's commitment to sustainable design, and they further invested in the space to create an award winning, LEED CI Platinum certified showroom environment.
Designers at TVSDesign and engineers from ARC Engineering teamed with designers at Herman Miller to create a state-of-the-art facility while retaining the raw characteristics of the original building. A custom lighting design from Herman Miller's product lines was a primary aspect of the space, and the engineer fully implemented the Convia Lighting control system, all while the architect retained the original exposed, bow string wood trusses overhead.
Dynamic curved and leaning elliptical walls guide spatial flow and organize Herman Miller product displays. Movable glass partitions and recofigurable furniture allow for complete flexibility in the space, while certain areas, such as the conference room, utilize built walls and hard lid ceilings with innovative LED cove lighting to create stunning effects. Extensive millwork in the space anchors certain areas, like the kitchen, amidst an ever-changing showroom environment.
