HBC is dedicated to supporting charities that hold
significance for our employee-owners and the communities they belong to. In
pursuit of this commitment, we organize an annual event known as "Choose
Your Charity," allowing HBC employee-owners to nominate a charity
deserving of a monetary donation from HBC. 2023 marks our fourth consecutive
year giving back through this event.
Each nomination comprises details such as the charity's mission, the positive impact it has on the community, and the reason the charity is meaningful to the employee-owner. Subsequently, our internal Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) Communications Committee votes on the submissions. This year, we are pleased to announce that we were able to contribute to a total of nine different charities!
We are excited to share the organizations that were selected for this year’s “Choose Your Charity” event and a little bit of the impact they have on our communities:
Beauty 2 the Streetz – serves the homeless community by not only providing them with a hot shower and warm meal, but also encouraging confidence through a makeover and new hairstyle and, most importantly, establishing a human connection with the community they serve
Encircle – offers mental health services and resources for LGBTQ+ youth, young adults, and families to help them feel safe and supported with the ultimate goal of achieving improved mental health outcomes
Olive Crest – provides counseling and mentoring to children in crisis including victims of abuse and neglect, as well as adoption stability and support to provide a safe and loving home for every child
Pancreatic Cancer Action Network – advocates for the improvement of the lives of those impacted by pancreatic cancer by advancing scientific research, sharing knowledge, and building community among patients
Benevolent Fund at New Life Community Church – offers financial resources to aid those who are in economic distress as a result of COVID
St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital – provides treatment, travel, housing, and food for children with catastrophic diseases regardless of race, religion, or family’s ability to pay, and they often provide these services at no cost
Ventura Police Department K9 Unit – provides protection to their community through canine patrol 24/7, and funds raised by the unit pay for the canines, their training, and associated medical care and gear
ASPCA – fights animal cruelty by supporting the rescue and adoptions of animals in need including pets, farm animals, and horses, as well as advocating for legislative change to fight cruelty and promote animal welfare
Spondylitis Association of America (SAA) – supports the study and research of ankylosing spondylitis and related diseases in the quest for a cure, as well as offering educational programs to improve the outcomes of impacted patients and aid healthcare professionals in diagnosing and treating those affected
Thank you to this year’s nominated charities for their positive and enduring contributions to our shared communities.
