Bringing Home the Silver

03/05/2019

As always, it is an honor to take part in the annual Los Angeles Business Journal’s Commercial Real Estate Awards. In its 24th year, the awards show has grown into one of the most notable celebrations of the real estate landscape in Los Angeles. Hundreds of the industry’s best brokers, general contractors, architects, and developers gather together to recognize industry-changing people and projects. Categories such as Best Hospitality Project, Best Industrial Project, and Best Medical Project, among others, show the breadth of expertise and talent in the greater Los Angeles community. HBC is pleased to announce that the AwesomenessTV project won the LABJ CRE Silver Award for Best Tenant Improvement Project.

About the Award-Winning Space

The AwesomenessTV headquarters, a collaborative project from HBC, AMA Project Management, and Skidmore, Owings, & Merrill, is the quintessence of forward-thinking workplace design, representing the increasing investment in finding a perfect balance between environmental sustainability and human connectivity. The location itself is part of a larger adaptive reuse project that transformed the previous manufacturing facility into a multi-tenant creative office. Sustainability is engrained in the very structure of the workspace, as it is strategically located near a Metro line with a parking structure that offers ample bike parking. As one of the anchor tenants, AwesomenessTV’s 80,000 square foot space provided a blank canvas to saturate with the most innovative design practices. Collaboration was at the forefront of design, evidenced by three circular conference rooms, exposed bleacher seating, and a circular pantry. A dramatic 31-foot glass doorway opens into a minimalist reception desk and exposed waiting area. The company’s logo is emblazoned above the main entrance, and similarly branded graphics are interspersed throughout. Executive offices and collaborative workspaces are capped by a production studio, greenroom, and theater. The overarching theme of repurposed functionality ties the space together with exposed concrete and wooden ceilings. Cutting edge 3form materials align the pantry, promoting sustainability and social responsibility. This isn’t the first award under the AwesomenessTV headquarters’ belt. In 2018, it won the LABC Award for Interiors and was a nominee for the IIDA Calibre Award for Work Extra Large.

A Longstanding Relationship with the CRE Awards

HBC’s dedication to bringing our client’s vision to fruition has yielded multiple LABJ CRE awards and nominations over the years. Being a tenant improvement general contractor, HBC has received several nominations for projects in the Best Tenant Improvement category, including the Fender project in this year’s awards show. Last year, HBC took home the Silver Award in the same category with the BCG Digital Ventures project, and the Red Bull North American Headquarters won Gold in 2016. Also in 2016, HBC’s Boingo Wireless won Silver and Fullscreen won Bronze in the Best Office Project category. The 2015 Best Redevelopment Projects were awarded to Smashbox Studios and Sunset Media Center for the Silver and Gold Awards, respectively, and the YouTube Space LA won Silver in the same category the year prior.

Having our projects recognized by the LABJ and real estate community is a humbling, rewarding experience, and we are thankful for everyone involved. We are looking forward to what the year ahead brings as we continue to build spaces and turning the imaginings of our clients into a reality.
