K-Cup Recycling Program
04/19/2023
At HBC, we recognize how harmful waste is to our environment. Whether it be mass-produced waste from a jobsite or the plastic straw in our drink, every piece that is recycled responsibly contributes to environmental stewardship. Our internal, employee-run Sustainability Committee has implemented several changes to reduce unnecessary waste from our daily operations. The Committee noticed how much plastic is used daily from the Keurig machines in our Orange County and Los Angeles offices. As a result, HBC now partners with Keurig and g2 revolution to recycle all the K-Cup coffee pods that are used. Through the implementation of the K-Cycle program, HBC is able to recycle 100% of the K-Cup coffee pod materials, ultimately diverting large amounts of waste from landfills.

Working Wardrobes Clothing Drive
02/15/2023
Throughout the month of January, HBC held a clothing drive in both the OC and LA offices to benefit Working Wardrobes, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping disadvantaged individuals obtain employment. HBC employee-owners and their families brought in gently used professional clothes to donate to the organization, which ranged from business casual attire, formal suiting, shoes, and accessories. In total, HBC donated over 650 items of clothing. With these items, Working Wardrobes will provide styling services to people facing employment barriers and, ultimately, arm these people with the skills and confidence needed to achieve the dignity of work and build lasting economic stability for themselves and their families. The recent clothing drive is just one of the many ways that HBC has partnered with Working Wardrobes. Our Talent Acquisition & Development specialist, Agnes Cimino, has been volunteering with them since November, providing career counseling, including mock interviews, job search assistance, resume writing, and styling clients for their interviews. Working Wardrobes was also one of the recipients of HBC’s 2022 Choose Your Charity campaign. ABOUT WORKING WARDROBES Working Wardrobes was founded in 1990 with a mission to help men, women, young adults, and Veterans to achieve the “dignity of work.” By partnering with local corporations, volunteers, and organizations, Working Wardrobes is able to offer the community a wide range of programs and services including: job search resources, skill workshops, customer service training, financial needs assistance, wardrobe services and styling, and job placement. Since opening their doors, they have helped over 100,000 individuals secure employment to provide for themselves and their families. Mental Health Matters
05/14/2021
The National Institute of Mental Health states one in five adults are affected by a behavioral health condition, and yet, only about half seek treatment.1 When considering occupation, the construction industry consistently ranks at the top in terms of most at risk for suicide.2 The stress of our industry is nothing new, however, we have only recently started to open up about how this affects our mental health and wellbeing. Industry stressors have only been amplified by COVID-19, making it crucial to continue to address employee mental health, talk openly about coping strategies, and reduce the stigma associated with mental health.3

Warehouse Hubs and Repositioned Spaces
11/24/2020
Industrial/Warehouse E-commerce sales have increased every year since inception. After the stay-at-home mandates were enacted due to the COVID-19 pandemic, e-commerce sales absolutely skyrocketed. In order to continue to fulfill this rising demand, big corporations have begun seeking large industrial and warehouse spaces. Whereas before, one or two large central warehouses were the standard for product fulfillment and packaging, companies are now seeking to purchase multiple flagship hubs. These distribution and fulfillment hubs are central to high-population areas.1 As a result, e-commerce companies are able to keep up with demand, decrease transit time, and save on transportation costs. Furthermore, companies can store a larger product backlog to proactively counteract potential delays due to COVID-19.2 The global pandemic is anticipated to continue to accelerate the need for more industrial spaces3. Therefore, it is important to know what differentiates industrial buildouts from other construction niches. Warehouse buildings have specific requirements for optimal production. By looking at some of HBC’s warehouse and industrial projects, we can examine these commonalities.
An ESOP Story: Howard Building Corporation
10/28/2020
How did HBC evolve into an ESOP?In the early eighties, a young Mike Howard sought a solution to a problem he saw in the industry. The term “tenant improvement,” as we now understand it, was not yet a fully developed category. Construction firms were doing it all, from core and shell to the interior. It was a noble pursuit, but by the time these firms got around to the interior, resources had run low. Little time and money were being spent on building the interior—the heart—of these spaces. Mike Howard’s solution? Howard Building Corporation (HBC).
HBC's Laboratory Experience
09/30/2020
When people think of Howard Building Corporation (HBC), they’re likely to think of large corporate buildouts or tech-intensive tenant improvements. What some may not realize, however, is that HBC has completed numerous complex laboratory facilities. In fact, our expertise in building intricate, large scale labs has garnered attention from some of the largest companies in healthcare, aerospace, manufacturing, food science, and more. Some of our earliest projects have included laboratory components, and we have been perfecting our laboratory expertise ever since.

To Our Clients & Industry Partners
05/28/2020
Howard Building Corporation (HBC) has been able to maintain regular business hours and keep a vast majority of jobsites open during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our standard business practices, however, have been anything but regular. Our office staff has adapted to a work-from-home model, and our field staff has been adapting to new jobsite guidelines. As we move into the next phase of California’s reopening, we will transition again, this time towards some semblance of “normal.” While we don’t know what this new phase looks like, we know HBC is prepared to take the challenge in stride.
Leadership in the Midst of a Crisis
05/01/2020
Nobody could have predicted the sequence of events that occurred as a result of the Novel Coronavirus outbreak. Aside from major, irrevocable consequences caused by a virus that nobody had heard of just a few months prior, businesses across the world have been forced to adapt quickly. As a result, businesses and communities are rising to the occasion and demonstrating resiliency, courage, and fortitude in a situation where a straightforward solution is muddled underneath layers of “what-if” scenarios. There are truly inspiring stories of leaders who are facing the unknown head-on while providing stability to others in the midst of a global crisis. Here is how HBC’s employee-owners are navigating the coronavirus outbreak.
Celebrating Women in Construction
03/27/2020
As we quickly approach the end of March, we’d like to commemorate all the women in construction and, in particular, shine a spotlight on a few women at HBC. Last year, we interviewed one of our Project Managers, Sarah Webb, to glean insight about how to have a successful career in construction. If you missed it, you can find the article here.
Trends in Healthcare Design
01/30/2020
As our aging population grows, new technology arises, and overall health improves, healthcare priorities have adapted. HBC’s healthcare division has seen this firsthand. The shift has resulted in a changing healthcare real estate market which, in turn, impacts how these projects are constructed. The healthcare industry is one of the largest in the U.S., and the demand for new facilities continues to grow exponentially. Approximately 40% of demand is for the construction of outpatient facilities and medical office buildings.1 This article will explore how healthcare design has shifted within the past five years and how these changes reflect the values of our healthcare-seeking population. We will then turn to our own recently completed healthcare projects as case studies for the current healthcare model and for what is to come.

Our project management teams function like a well-oiled machine, bidding on potential projects, coordinating the intricacies of current projects, and meeting the demands of everything in between. They are collaborators, creators, and innovators, and they are a crucial component of our growing family of 170.

The Life and Legacy of Gary Conrad
07/01/2019
Reflecting on the life and legacy of one of our founders is by no means accomplished in one article, one celebration, or one moment of silence. Understanding the enormity of Mr. Conrad’s contribution to HBC may be achieved only by devoting an entire career to the industry or working alongside him building the company into what it is now. Although words pale in comparison to his dynamic, charismatic personality, we continue to celebrate Gary Conrad and the inextricable influence he will always have on HBC and the industry.
LABC to Recognize the Best of L.A. Architecture at their Annual Luncheon
06/18/2019
History of LABC Founded in 1936, the Los Angeles Business Council (LABC) is as much a part of Los Angeles as the historic Downtown buildings from the same era. From the outset, LABC has represented Los Angeles’ forward-thinking ideals by facilitating the growth of one of West Coast’s major hubs of progressive education: University of California, Los Angeles. As a non-profit, the organization successfully expanded UCLA’s presence and then broadened their reach to encompass all of Los Angeles while continuing to advocate for education, sustainability, and business.¹

Building as If Every Day is Earth Day
04/22/2019
Unfortunately, the construction industry has historically been the biggest culprit of energy depletion and CO2 emissions, to the tune of globally accounting for about 36% and 39%, respectively.1 These numbers may be disheartening, but global dialogue has increased awareness and industry leaders have responded with action. By implementing green building policies, sharing data-driven information, and promoting environmentally-sustainable practices, we can all do our part to be conscious, responsible contributors within the construction industry. As the preeminent tenant improvement general contractor in Southern California, Howard Building Corporation (HBC) builds workspaces – or “second homes” – while recognizing the potential impact on our larger collective home. At HBC, we do everything in our power to positively impact the environment, and it is crucial, more than ever, that we continue to be a leader in the green building movement.

There is hardly a better way to spend a beautiful Los Angeles morning than among a sea of runners and walkers with one common goal – to help provide a local, non-profit healthcare facility with the resources needed to continue serving the greater community. This was exactly the motive behind California Hospital Medical Center (CHMC)’s Heart of the City 5K, which was held on Saturday, March 30. All proceeds from the event went to expanding their services into a new, four-story building that includes a full-service trauma center and a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Howard Building Corporation is proud to have been a course sponsor with two competing Corporate Cup Teams and several individuals who walked the course in support.

11/09/2017
As Americans, and as civilians, we occasionally take for granted the freedom and liberties our everyday lives are accustomed to, and that our forefathers fought so courageously to establish. The brave men and women who have served our country, and who continue to serve today, risking their own lives for the betterment of others, deserve our gratitude and respect on daily basis, not just one a year. This month, we remember and thank our Veterans, across all branches, for their service and sacrifice.

The New Look of HBC
12/04/2014
We're celebrating the launch of our new website and logo!New HBCLogoMany of our clients and industry partners are familiar with the iconic HBC logo. Easily recognizable, the logo was designed over 15 years ago by Walt Thomas, founder of AREA. Walt hand drew the original HBC letters to create a custom look and feel that would establish the company's brand identity, and we have been known by those characteristic letters ever since. As we grow into the future, it seems natural that our logo would change to express who we are now. It''s important to us that we continue the legacy of our iconic HBC logo, but we have chosen to update the font and composition slightly to bring more attention to our full name Howard Building Corporation. Our company was established by Mike Howard over 30 years ago, and our foundation is strong. By bringing attention to the Howard name, we honor our history, while we simultaneously look to our future.
